Dark Sanctuary - 2010 - Dark Sanctuary

Country:  France

Label: AvantGarde Music

Format: MP3@VBR V2

Size:  78 mb

About Release:

""Immaculately beautiful." These are the words which must be spoken when discussing the French band, Dark Sanctuary. They create a lovely, lush, somber neo-classical sound with powerful female vocals soaring and ascending above the layers of piano, synthesizer, strings, acoustic guitar, and percussion. Dark Sanctuary draws upon different shades of melancholy, from light grey to deep black, thanks to their unbreakable union of dark orchestral music and heavenly voices, all performed by conservatory-calibre musicians. Sadness, disenchantment, and heartbreak which knows no boundary motivate Dark Sanctuary. This is profound, sad and nostalgic music infused with the atmosphere of a cathedral in mourning."

Coph Nia - Mindspawn - 2005 - Erotomechaniks

Label: Punch Records

Format: MP3@VBR V2

Size: 105 mb

About Release:

CD jewelcase with 8-pages booklet in Splicase Limited to 500 copies!!! Across apocalyptic vistas of blasted earth and twisted machinery, the sound of the Erotomechanicks comes like a blaring klaxon, announcing the unholy alliance of Coph Nia and Mindspawn. Their aural sorcery grinds through the core of one's being, through one's soul. Relentless, ominous, unbeing.... Erotomechanicks shares much with the imagery associated with Giger, Brom, Dali, and Frazetta; strange worlds of dark biomechanical demons where humanity is decaying in the charnel heaps of an apocalyptic landscape. Great hive cites sprawl both above and below ground, engorged by the throngs that serve in the factories, cogs in a wheel that turns relentlessly. The mechanics that service the great machines so reverently incant their liturgies much as a one would sing poetry to a sacred lover.

Restructuralized, re-arranged and remixed in 2006.   Musicians: Vladimír Hirsch - keyboards, synthesizers, samplers, drums, vocals, programming; participation of Martina Sanollová and Dominika Karčovská (vocals) and Czech Integrated Ensemble and Choir. Vladimír Hirsch - 2008 - Exorcisms

Release type: Full-length

Style: Dark Ambient/Neoclassical/Experimental

Country: Czech Republic

Label:  Ars Benevola Mater

Format: MP3@VBR V2

Size: 103 mb

MySpace

About Release:

The album Exorcisms (opus 61/II) was created in 2006 as another monolithic work in spirit of the author´s original conception of integrated music with further evolution in the characteristics of composition style towards more complicated inner articulation of music pieces whose structure oscillates between tense or martial elements and music imagination of all absorbing ungraspable space doubtlessly demonstrating the author´s existential dialog between inner weight of physical reality and admiration for immeasurable atributes of spirituality in human. Then, that "cosmic" element is of various intensity, allegorically expressing some kind of philosophical antithesis in confrontation between spiritual and materialistic world representing by its characteristics the space of our mind in opposition to the monodimensional limitation of our thinking by load of the matter. One could call this album a ripe resultation of the author´s struggle for further music dimension in the system of "order in chaos" and another new step in its specific dark ambient classical or better said post-industrial dark ambient non-classical integration.     The name "Exorcisms" evokes some medieval connotations, its genuine sense here embodied in its simple general interpretation – as a prayer, serving to exemption from maleficiencial tendencies. Here we can hear echoes of medieval Czech chorals with tones abruptly and ostentatiously invading the created space as remarkable reminders of permanent struggle of two antagonistic forces in human, musically described as harmonic and sound thesis and antithesis in one, their cross-fades, changes, mutual interferences and emphasis on consciousness of necessity of their coexistence. Obviously enough the author´s affection for the archaic is indubitable and probably arose from generally false sight of the past and today. He evidently cannot fight off conviction of the presence of spiritual brightness in "dark ages" and the darkness of absence of that quality in proclaimed "bright" modern period. “Extract from article by Jan Blanicky“

Myrmyr - 2009 - The Amber Sea

Release type: Full-length

Style: Experimental/Drone Ambient/Darkfolk Soundscapes

Country:  USA

Label: Digitalis

Format: MP3@VBR V2

Size: 54 mb

Official

About Release:

*Try and imagine the kind of broken drones and edgy experimentation Ben Frost makes crossed with the strings of Hildur Gudnadottir and the sea shanties of Matt Elliott and you'll get some ideas of the incredible, deeply original music of Myrmyr* This Oakland duo brings together Agnes Szelag with Marielle Jakobsons (aka Darwinsbitch) for a debut album consisting of incredible modified sea shanties, cinematic-style ensemble pieces and folk/drone hybrids that have just blown our minds. 'Jurata' opens the album with a suspenseful opacity, loaded with string and harmonium drones while vocals drift along in a ghostly, haunting fashion. Somewhere in the background percussion jostles, occasionally sounding like faulty central heating, and ultimately making a seamless transition into 'Baltic WInds', whose fractured bowed tones make for a semi-conscious soundscape while electro-static, processed bells clang and cascade around the edges. 'First Seed' is a far more clear-cut affair, concentrating on the tightly orchestrated confluence of cello, clarinet, flute and trombone for a deep and cinematic piece of music. From here on the sophistication and depth of variation in this music only seems to heighten: 'Egle's Escape' presents a dark avant-folk universe (bringing to mind Mi & L'au, Pantaleimon and Espers all at once), while the string melodies and wonderful, thorny harp textures of 'Dancing In Captivity' suggest a kind of gothic avant-garde. Perhaps best of all, at the centre of this album lies 'The Sea Returns', a radiant fifteen minute composition that starts out as a tentative ambient excursion - full of lulling drones and fragmented instrumental eruptions - only to seemingly wake up after a few minutes of languid swirling, eventually developing into a complex soundscape full of euphoric dissonance, spurts of noise and plenty of harmonic flair. There's a tremendous amount to take in here and you won't be able to absorb even half of this album upon first listen, but in terms of its vision, and the roving musical dexterity on show throughout, it's one of the most unique and absorbing albums we've heard this year.

Atomine Elektrine - 1999 - Archimetrical Universe (2009 Reissue)

Release type: Full-length

Style: Trance/Abstract/Ambient

Country:

Label: Eternal Pride Productions

Format: MP3@VBR V2

Size: 92 mb

About Release:

Eternal Pride Prod. presents re-mixed version of "Archimetrical Universe" + bonus tracks from extra limited CDr boxed version of the album "Nebulous". New edition like DIGI-CD with new design. Space is an illusion. Peter Andersson (Raison D'etre, Stratvm Terror, Svasti-ayanam, Necrophorus) is one of the handful of finest sound manipulators in the world. Period. Archimetrical Universe showcases Peter's dissection of the sky, a Caesarean section that births massive, geometrically perfect sonic diversions, all spheres and angles, burnished metal dreams and pristine sonic caresses that reconfigure sound into smooth surfaces. To counterbalance the exactness of the sonic development, light rhythms emerge, huge slabs of disrupting tones puncture, the scattered remnants of all of Peter's projects utilized in the creation of the music here. Everything seems to be in perpetual motion, evolving, revolving, reinvented at the mercy of Peter's deft hands and devious whim. The clarity of production and meticulous restructuring of the known (space, stars, planets) with the unknown (space...stars...planets...) only heightens the journey upon which he guides us, an alluring venture into the cavernous realm of space...but not a space most of us would imagine. Whether he is sonically scrubbing the architecture, or just mesmerizing us with another sound sculpture at the edge of forever, Archimetrical Universe is, quite possibly, Peter's finest release yet, which says a lot because his sonic portfolio runneth over with intoxicating, mind-altering sound manipulations that inspire one's imagination with conflicting emotional responses (sorrow, desolation, awe, wonder) at all times. Space is an illusion...but Peter has brought it to life. Essential!

Format: MP3@VBR V2

Size: 86 mb

About Release:

"While I was recently traveling through Eastern Europe recently , I passed through an area of industrial decline that reminded me strongly of the devastation of the Industrial heartlands of the UK during the early Thatcher years. The broken windows and twisted metal of the abandoned warehouses, the derelict pit-heads and the ruined factories all brought back memories of that grim time when the divide between rich and poor was never so obvious. Yet amongst the derelict factories and the red-brick estates of the North of England new music and art sprang forth as if driven by the desolate conditions. Out of the darkness came forth beauty in many forms.     Wasteland raga is a remembrance of those times when art and politics held close and intertwined out of a real sense of purpose and unity. Now we have the bland unoriginal days of New Labour and the suits , bland self-satisfied music, and the crassness of yet another bad "art installation" in a "city of culture". Passing through the derelict wastelands of Industrial decline in Eastern Europe I was touched with nostalgia for a time when there was a sense of "us and them".  Art has stuck it's fat lazy arse on the side of the suits and the money men. Viva revolution!!!" Robin Storey                                                                                   Released on Russian label Aquarellist. Limited edition of 1000 copies.

On Haunted Memories, Immundus goes even nearer to perfecting his signature sound of Mysterious and Haunting Music. This release comes on a Pro CD A5 Digipack with fitting artworks from Depraved Designs and professionally mastered by Andrea Marutti at Lips Vago Digital Studio in Milan, Italy. A very solid release and recomended for fans of unconvencional Dark Ambient as well as for fans of Instrumental music and Horror Soundtracks. Winter Torments Zine : "An elegant and sophisticated album, even by those who appreciate Dark Ambient, and often do not attend ... " (By Aristocrazia Webzine) "This is possibly the best-kept secret to the art of a great chilling masterpiece" (NekroDeath Reviews and Interviews) "Immundus certainly know how to create atmosphere, with dark nights in misanthropic isolation. This will tickle the the morbidity of the more cryptomaniacal listener without a doubt, and turn them perhaps into untranslatable fanatics, unable to communicate their calliginous visions." (whispering gloom zine)" "It's a cleverly structured album, managing to sustain interest and threat throughout, while still providing plenty of relaxed, glacial passages that will satisfy the listener who is content not to engage the imagination, and expects a soothing experience from their ambient music."(Hierophant Nox Zine) "10 tracks in all that will really send chills and thrills down your spine, a perfect mood setting experience from start to finish." (Mykl Neufeld aka Ambient Portal) "This is probably one of the most chilling, haunting releases you will ever hear! Each track on "Haunted Memories" tells a story {without ever using a single word} of pure terror and leaves the listener with a uneasy feeling."

Konau - 2006 - Speech From The Shadows

Release type: Full-length

Style: Dark Ambient

Country: Italy

Label: Eibon Records

Format: MP3@VBR V2

Size: 83 mb

Official

About Release:

A meeting of minds that has produced an dark ambient masterpiece. That was my gut feeling after hearing this debut by Konau. The more I heard it the more that feeling of mine was proved correct. Konau is the combined talents of Subinterior and members from New Risen Throne. Although New Risen Throne, whose recordings I have in my collection, haven't appeared in AP for review (if you don't send them in they can't be written up) Subinterior did enjoy a good review from yours truly so I know what I'm talking about. Which makes a change I suppose. Eibon Records also know a good thing when they hear it which is why they've had the sense to put this release out. The recordings I get from this label get my respect for their quality every time.   "Speech from the shadows" is six tracks lasting just under 52 minutes of the darkest of dark music. The haunting refrain of twisted shadows and cold dank cellars. Of water slowly dripping into murky pools reflected in the moonlight. A claustrophobic virtual musical extravaganza where candle lights flicker and small whips of smoke rise to the ceiling. Reverberating layered alien sounds punctuate the air as an all encompassing presence makes itself felt. Traversing down long deserted corridors to the sounds of monks chanting in the distance whilst something evil follows closely behind. Abandoned and forgotten about. A traveller lost in time and space. Ancient relics of the past finally uncovered by the elements. Voices not of this earth calling from a distance. Dead men walking. Lost souls haunting their surroundings. Disembodied voices and distant rumbles punctuate the fetid air. The absolute meaning of darkness worn like a mask of despair suffocating the wearer. Intimidating ethereal atmospheres run amok with gleeful abandon. The fertile imaginations of those who hear this will see their own visions that these tracks invoke. Which is why this genre of music so inspires. It develops a unique picture to each individual who comes into contact with it. No two people will conjure up the same references as they bathe in the glorious sounds. Heard in the bright light of day is a totally different experience from hearing it sat in the pitch black through a set of headphones. There are of course many such recordings that have the same effect and this release by Konau joins that illustrious list. A serious contender for one of the records of the year? and its only April!! A must have for all you black hearts out there and a timeless classic which will take some surpassing.

About Release:

Review from  www.heathenharvest.com :

It's a sunny Monday in late June. I got out of bed and picked one of the many CD's I am going to review. I was tired and in a crappy mood. I pressed play and suddenly the hot sun vanished and I was surrounded by soothing darkness and soft rain. Vergissmeinnicht is a solo project by a man named Lu. He has his roots in black metal (solo band Heartless ), and it seems the Black Metal genre has another side it needs to vent. More and more often these days I see the folkish side coming out. It's not a far stretch at all, remember black metal and folk share much of the same emotions and ideas, as well as chord progressions. (Gaahl, former member of Gorgoroth, blew my mind with his work for Wardruna , and let's not forget the magnificent work by Ulver.  Lu's black metal past certainly makes up a solid foundation for his guitar skills. The digipack is well done in tasteful cold colours, complimented by a lake obscured by fog, and a sunset or a sunrise in the background. The design suits the music. Vergissmeinnicht ( Forget me not, the flower) is not your typical run of the mill folk project mind you, as ambient soundscapes are equally present. A soft whispering vocal and subtle sounds in the background gently pulls you into a melancholic state. I would have enjoyed it even more if the flute was real and not digital though, it would make this release so much more authentic and less plasticy and soft synth-sounding, like on track # 9, Buried By time and parts of track # 10, Depression. Interestingly enough, considering Lu is chinese, some parts of his music has an Eastern European vibe to it. There is nothing Asian about this at all. Cold, insular, distant, melancholic, without being moaning. Well done. However it is puzzling that someone with such an understanding, and interest, for European musical history should show such a lack of knowledge when it comes to his own region's history – as in stating that Tibet has always been a part of china on his Heartless myspace site. Politics aside, Vergissmeinnicht is a little gem in the folk necklace, it does not shine the brightest, but it fits right in there with all the others. Vergissmeinnicht is not trying to be brighter or bolder that it really is. And I give Lu credit for that. Listen to Lu's release when you are alone, when it's dark outside. Light some candles, lean back and close your eyes. Vergissmeinnicht is not a release that will affect you forever, but nothing lasts forever.

About Release:

A full-format album of esoteric-noise project. The project of one person AKPAN has arisen in 2005 in Krasnogorsk, a city situated near Moscow. Creative inspirers of AKPAN are Siberian shaman practitioners, a booming echo of ancient shaman stratum - a religion of bon-po in Buddhism and modern noise landscapes of dark ambient. Therefore it is no wonder that the music created by the project AKPAN is a deep, hypnotic and gloomy mix of "enveloping" ambient, the Tibetan mantras and shaman rhythms. In a recording of the album "Schwarze Sonne"  in addition to studio dark ambient "backgrounds",  guimbarde, throat singing, a self-made wind instrument - the analogue of the Tibetan pipe, percussion on various metal designs were used. If one draws parallels with the western artists, the works of AKPAN will be interesting to those who have in their collection INADE, HERBST9, ritual music of Tibet, PREDOMINANCE, early CURRENT 93, SIGILLUM S, Alexey Tegin and group PHURPA, NORDVARGR, TOROIDH...
