Amongst Myselves - 2007 - Auburn Silhouette

Release type: Full-length

Style: Ambient

Country: Australia

Label: Amongst Projects

Format: Format: MP3@VBR V2

Size: 84 mb

Official

About Release:

The new release from celebrated Australian musician Steve Roberts aka. Amongst Myselves takes the listener on an unforgettable ambient journey through the elements. Each track from ‘Auburn Silhouette’ evokes a different environmental experience, with inspiration drawn from outback South Australia and 12 months working and travelling overseas. For the first time, the release is accompanied by a bonus DVD of three short films produced by Roberts and based on tracks from the album. “This is one of my most rewarding pieces of work to date - and certainly a headphone experience,” says Roberts. “I took a lot longer this time on my compositions as I felt I had rushed previous releases. It does take me a long time to meld the whole album together and I have realised that I prefer to take my time and enjoy the process,” he said. Contrast is a strong theme throughout the album and clearly seen in the tracks ‘Bay of Dreams’ and ‘Munstead Heath.’ In ‘Bay of Dreams’ Roberts calls upon treasured holiday memories to highlight the contrast between ‘the daily grind’ and ‘holiday calm’, with a segue between a sleepy lullaby and a cacophony of day-to-day noises. ‘Munstead Heath’ takes us from the snow and icicles of Roberts’ first Northern Winter to the intoxicating heat of Malaysia. The tracks ‘Star’, ‘Southern Lights’ and ‘Up Into the Air and Over the Edge’ are brilliantly illustrated by Roberts short films or ‘wallpaper’, which showcase his skills in time lapse photography, astronomy, visual effects and electronics. “I’m very excited to include my films with the release. As a film maker and sound producer by trade, creating film that helps convey the feelings within the tracks has been a long term goal for me,” he said.

Roberts has recently achieved solid international success with the inclusion of the track ‘ Distant Horizons’ on a new compilation album ‘Ultima Thule – Chasing the Dawn.’ The album features 78 minutes of previously unreleased music from the world’s most acclaimed ambient composers, among them Steve Roach, Robert Rich, Tim Story, Jeff Grinke and Thom Brennan. Amongst Myselves made a first impression on the ambient music scene in 1999 with the release of ‘The Sun in the Bottle’. The entire Amongst Myselves catalogue is available through CD Baby, iTunes, MSN Music, Emusic, Arvato, Sony Connect, Choice Records to mention just a few of a total of 49 companies.

‘Auburn Silhouette’ will be available from CDbaby from the 25th of March 2007.

Relmic Statute - 2010 - Morning Tapes

Release type: Full-length

Style: Minimal Ambient/Experimental/Field Recording

Country: UK

Label: hibernate

Format: Format: MP3@VBR V2

Size: 89 mb

MySpace

About Release:

Relmic Statute (Cotton Goods) is Leeds-based artist David Horner, who assembles lulling, grainy soundscapes based on the splicing of field recordings collected from cassettes and old 1/4-inch tape. The tracks on the album were all produced individually and sporadically between 2000 and 2009, with no intention of assembling them into an album. The album title "Morning Tapes" simply reflects the fact that the instruments, audio and field recordings were all captured, tape looped, edited and processed during the morning. Mornings are an interesting time to capture music and make field recordings as it is a time when fully formed sounds converge with freshly emerging ones. The tracks on this album try to capture the juxtaposition of those two environments of sound. Mastered by Jannick Schou. Limited edition CD of 200 copies and packaged in a recycled PP case. Also available as a digital download.

Kraken - 2007 - Drift

Release type: Full-length

Country: Belgium

Label: Spectre

Format: Format: MP3@VBR V2

Size: 80 mb

About Release:

Trilogies always come in three parts, that is why they're called trilogies. And just like the latest two Kraken releases, the new album 'Drift' also comes in a minimal designed black and white cardboard cover. Which brings us to the conclusion that together with 'Amore' and 'Chagrin', the Kraken trilogy on Spectre has been completed. Amongst the multiple meanings of the Dutch 'Drift' there is 'Temper' and 'Impulse' which are the emotional layers on this CD, but it also reflects to a ship being uncontrolable. As all tracks are related to oceans and oceanlife (amongst them are 'Fighting with cachalot', 'Whalebones are not umbrella's' and 'Sushi is murder') we can see what upsets Kraken . And the music fits their anger perfectly; A layering of dark ambience and deep opressive drones, spoken word in various languages and a pinch of noise. Three emotions were Kraken's guideline while writing the trilogy and 'Drift' definitly is the most inhospitable and threatning of them. This third journey through the deepest caverns of their minds revealed a truth, more gross and repulsive than anyone can imagine. It's a small black hole which swallows everything, including hope. Let us find it and burn it ...

Celer - 2010 - Pockets Of Wheat

Release type: Full-length

Label: Soundscaping Records

Format: Format: MP3@VBR V2

Size:  90 mb

About Release:

Soundscaping Records are very pleased to invite Celer for the label’s second release, Pockets of Wheat, a most special album to us. Celer is the sound, visual, literary, and artistic endeavor of the husband and wife duo of Will Long and Danielle Baquet-Long. The album was recorded during a three day journey driving across the US from California to Mississippi, while the musician couple spent their days at a small hotel in Northern Texas. During these three days, they realized the concept of ‘Pockets of Wheat/Exteriors’, created illustrations for their intent of the music and penned down a library of notes and structures to use. Hence, made many field recordings and string recordings with equipment brought along, while other piano pieces were recorded later on an old, unused family piano. From their room at the back of the hotel, they saw endless stretches of wheat fields. With open windows, the couple noticed the constant sound of the wheat blowing from the wind, an almost gentle, yet persistent, crackling and fuzz, but also changed constantly. Creating music in their original form, drawing on feelings of togetherness, intimacy, and the expansiveness surrounding them, with the ever-changing landscape, the concept of ‘Pockets of Wheat/Exteriors’ was perceived. With associations to the ghost of Algernon Blackwood’s The Willows, in entirety founded in nature, perceptions arose through constant interpretation of the sounds of nature; aggression, subtlety, intimacy, and distance. Roughly five hours of recordings of cello, violin, piano, bells, crickets, and wind were then applied the idea of an ‘always changing but always the same’ idea to it. Splicing the recordings to about hundred 5-10 second tape loops, the loops were then played back from laptops and repeated in arbitrarily selected order by the two musicians without predetermined order. As such, the movements of the wheat in the fields by the winds were mimicked: always similar, but constantly changing. The enclosed recording contains 7 movements, though they are strung together not to break the continuity. The several layers found within the recording are not always discernible, but are still there, just more subtle, as is the case with details in nature. Nature’s presence is also an imperative, though not the sole inspiration, but in the end the music of Celer in Pockets of Wheat expresses purely their feelings, identity and the atmosphere surrounding these moments, and in keeping with a continuous recording, captures the essence of what is heard in our daily lives, essentially one singular thing: sound. Nest - 2010 - Retold

Release type: Full-length

Style: Ambient/Neoclassical

Country: UK

Label: Serein

Format: Format: MP3@VBR V2

Size: 80 mb

Preview

About Release:

'Retold' is an apt title for this body of work, at times light and serene, other times dark, brooding and sinister - Nest are expert storytellers. Taking cues from film soundtracks and contemporary classical music, the story is woven using a myriad of instrumentation. Dulcet piano tones are backed by string and horn arrangements, unidentifiable plucked instruments and the sound of the Welsh harp; often heavily processed, Retold is an album that has as much in common with experimental electronic music as it does with modern classical composition. Nest is the collaborative project of Otto Totland and Huw Roberts. The first six tracks on this album were originally released in 2007 on the eponymously titled Nest EP; they are presented here again having been remastered alongside five new pieces composed in 2009. A revised edition of the track 'Cad Goddeu' was created especially for this release.

Konntinent - 2010 - Opal Island

Release type: Full-length

Style: Drone Ambient/Experimental

Country: UK

Label: Home Normal

Format: Format: MP3@VBR V2

Size: 99 mb

MySpace

About Release:

Konntinet is the moniker adopted by Anthony Harrison, previously seen on labels like Symbolic Interaction and Dynamophone Records. This Home Normal release is surely his highest profile work to date however, notably aided by a Taylor Deupree mastering job. In fact, much of the material on Opal Island wouldn't sound too out of place on 12k, although the release strays beyond the parameters of archetypal microsound-based material when Harrison's guitar gets involved. In these moments the album shifts over into a more post-rock styled mode that's perhaps comparable to some of Mark Nelson's Pan American material (listen to the delicate, downbeat tones of 'Frost Fair', for instance). Glitchy micro-rhythms add plenty of texture and rhythmic presence to Harrison's processed ambiences - something that works especially well during 'Dry Eyed', featuring singer Lisa Madisson. Guitars and vocals are sliced into with a digital scalpel, leaving what sounds a little like a chewed-up and dissolved version of a Beth Orton song. Full-blooded beats make an appearance on the record too, with '44 55 33' offering a kick drum backbone while various treated field recordings and blurry guitars slide around in a bath of reverb. For the most part though, any rhythmic elements are confined to irregular loop structures, or occasionally, surges in amp hiss that have been sculpted into percussion, and the record tends to function on a fairly abstract level - albeit one that retains a sense of song-craft and comes with a heavy dose of atmospheric wistfulness.

Rome - 2010 - L'Assassin

Release type: EP

Country: Luxembourg

Label: [Trisol] Music Group GmbH

Format: Format: MP3@VBR V2

Size:  24 mb

About Release:

The traditions of (french) Chanson and (american) Folk are becoming more and more influential in their current work. Chansonniers like LÉO FERRÉ, JACQUES BREL and singer/songwriter heroes like CAVE, CASH and COHEN are obvious influences. The previous album “Flowers From Exile” already gave a first impression of what they themselves call 'Chanson Noir' – the darker side of singer/songwriter tradition: post-industrial-folk with bits and pieces of Electronic Pop, complex arrangements of breathtaking melodies, mesmerizing ballads of lyrical beauty, underlining ROME’s ethos of never faltering or remaining uninvolved. The EP/Single features four songs among which the exclusive and intimate track “One Flesh”. The creative input of new member Nikos Mavridis (on violin and other stringed instruments) has become more and more apparent, most obviously in the reinvented, “stringed” versions of two classic ROME tracks "Der Erscheinungen Flucht" and "Der Brandtaucher" from the highly successful album „Masse Mensch Material“.

Madder Mortem - 2009 - Eight Ways

Release type: Full-length

Style: Atmospheric Dark Metal

Country: Norway (Oslo)

Label: Peaceville Records

Format: MP3@CBR 320 Kbps | Lossless

Size:  150 mb | 467 mb

MySpace

About Release:

Written by gk on September 20th, 2009 Norway’s Madder Mortem has been practicing its own rather unique style of metal for a good 16 years now and Eight Ways is the band’s fifth album. Like always the formula for the band includes bits of traditional metal, plenty of acoustic parts, progressive rock and a slight touch of doom and alt rock with loads of groove all held together by Agnete M. Kirkevaag’s completely unique and powerful vocals. If that description sounds like it could be a bit of a mess, then worry not. The band is more than capable of writing great songs that are complex in arrangement but also quite catchy and memorable. Album opener Formaldehyde starts off slow and melodic before the band kicks things up a notch mixing a rumbling bass tone and heavy guitars with Agnete’s powerful voice. The Little Things is another superb song that mixes soft and heavy to great effect and sounds like The Gathering jamming with Arcturus. The highlight of the album though is the two songs in the middle. A Different Kind of Hell is held together by Agnete’s full bodied bellow and a cracking central riff while the largely acoustic When Dream and Day Collide once again plays out the band’s penchant for mixing soft and heavy to great effect and ends in an intense burst of heavy guitars and electronic noise. There really isn’t a bad song here, just a bunch of great songs and a few good songs. The rhythm section is superb right through and the drum and bass interplay really adds its weight to these songs. The guitar duo of BP and Odd are pretty much spot on and sound at home whether playing big fat grooves or during the softer parts but the star of the show really is Agnete. Her voice goes from quiet and contemplative to a loud, rich bellow and shows off tremendous range often sounding more like a jazz singer than a vocalist for a metal band. Also, her vocal melodies really help in making these songs memorable. Eight Ways is probably not an album that will appeal immediately but the more I listen to it the more I’m finding it difficult to find flaws. At the end of the day, if you’re a fan of this band then chances are you’ve got this already. If you’ve never heard of this band before then Eight Ways is pretty much the perfect place to start. Every good idea that the band has had in their last four albums has come to fruition on Eight Ways making this Madder Mortem’s best effort yet. Originally written for http://www.kvltsite.com
